Day 230 – Psalm 110

“The LORD said to my Lord…” Psalm 110:1a

SUPERSCRIPTION

This is one of the briefest superscriptions. The text is self-explanatory. “A Psalm of David.”

A MESSIANIC PSALM

A Messianic reference is found in Psalm 110. This psalm offers a significant glimpse of an aspect of the Messiah.

“The LORD said to my Lord,
‘Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.'”
Psalm 110:1

1. Two different words employed

a) “LORD”
i) This word is used by the NKJV translators to translate the letters YHWH.
ii) The historic usage of this word is found in Exodus 6:2-3.
b) “Lord”
i) A different word is used (Adonai).
ii) It is another word for God.
c) Obviously two Persons called “Lord” are in view here.

2. “Sit at My right hand”

a) This text is more easily understandable when we make reference to Psalm 2.
b) Psalm 2 is also a Messianic psalm.
i) God speaks of His Son (In Acts 2, the apostle Peter declares Jesus as the Messiah).
ii) He is established as the King.
iii) “Lord” in Psalm 110:1 is best understood as “King” (Psalm 2:6-7).
iv) The Messiah is the King who sits at the right hand of God.

3. “Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”

This text is best understood when we compare it with Psalm 2. The enemies of the Messiah would be subjugated by the LORD. All will be made to kneel at His footstool, one day!
