Day 250 – Psalm 115

“To Your name give glory…” Psalm 115:1b

ASCRIBING GLORY TO GOD

Psalm 115 was written by an anonymous psalmist who was deeply committed to the idea of ascribing glory to God.

“Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth.”
Psalm 115:1

1. “Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us”

a) A strong disclaimer is sent out.
b) The psalmist does not desire personal glory.
c) The pronoun “us” may well refer to the nation of Israel.
d) But he is deeply committed to this same belief- that glory should not be ascribed to man!

2. “But to Your name give glory”

a) Glory is naturally associated with the name of the individual.
b) Only God’s name is deserving of all glory (Psalm 113:2).
c) Ascribing glory to God is absolutely correct (Psalm 113:4-5).

3. Two reasons are given as to why glory be ascribed to God

a) “Because of Your mercy”
i) His mercy is truly great.
ii) It is gloriously displayed by the way He forgives sins (Psalm 103:11-12).
b) “Because of Your truth”
i) His truth is found in His Word.
ii) His word is pure (Psalm 12:6).
iii) It has wondrous power to teach and transform lives (Psalm 19:7-11).

To ascribe glory to God is the right thing to do, if we truly know the Lord!
