Day 286 – Psalm 119:49-56

“Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.” Psalm 119:54

PILGRIMAGE SONGS

The psalmist has no illusions about this life on earth. He wrote about how he felt like a stranger on earth (Psalm 119:19). He now adds the word “pilgrim” to his vocabulary.

“Indignation has taken hold of me
Because of the wicked, who forsake Your law.
Your statutes have been my songs
In the house of my pilgrimage.
I remember Your name in the night, O LORD,
And I keep Your law.
This has become mine, because I kept Your precepts.”
Psalm 119:53-56

1. In this world

a) There will be those who choose the path of wickedness.
b) These have forsaken the laws of God.
c) The psalmist sees himself as but a pilgrim on earth (similar to “a stranger”).

2. Initial response

a) Indignation took hold of the psalmist.
b) He was angry at the wicked.

3. A more mature response

a) Through the statutes of God.
b) The statutes were like songs.
c) Through meditation on the Word the Lord’s name is remembered.
d) The night season does not deter the psalmist from keeping the law of God.

4. “This has become mine, because I have kept Your precepts”

a) In context “this” most probably refers to the idea of “hope”.
b) This hope in God was now no longer theoretical.
c) This hope in God had become very real and personal. There is a special sense of “ownership” through the keeping of God’s precepts.
