Day 301 – Psalm 119:113-120

“You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word.” Psalm 119:114

A GREAT HOPE

One of the most prominent things the psalmist had in his life amidst severe afflictions was his sense of hope. There was always hope in his heart, no matter how dark things were.

“I hate the double-minded, but I love Your law.
You are my hiding place and my shield;
I hope in Your word.
Depart from me, you evildoers,
For I will keep the commandments of my God!
Uphold me according to Your word, that I may live;
And do not let me be ashamed of my hope.”
Psalm 119:113-116

1. Hope

a) This hope is in God.
b) The source of this hope is to be traced to the Word of God.

2. Hope challenged

a) The double-minded is unable to have a certain and great hope in God and His word.
b) The double-minded keeps vacillating between hope and doubts (James 1:6-8).
c) His “hatred” for the double-minded is to be understood in contrast to his love for God’s word.
d) Evildoers are always a challenge to hope in God.
e) The best way to deal with evildoers is to have nothing to do with them (Psalm 119:115a).

3. Prayer to be upheld in hope

a) Wisely the psalmist recognized his need for God.
b) He prays that he might be sustained by the Word of God.
c) He prays that he would never need to feel ashamed in his hope in God.
d) He knows that God would never let him down.
e) He prays that he would not let go of his hope in God and His word.
f) Prayer expresses necessary deep wisdom and humility on the part of the psalmist.
