Day 324 – Psalm 126

“When the LORD brought back the captivity of Zion, we were like those who dream.” Psalm 126:1

IN EXILE

To be forced into exile must be one of life’s greatest tragedies. The exiled feel uprooted. They are oppressed in a foreign country. They have to adapt quickly or perish.

HOPE OF RETURNING

One of the things that could keep the spirit alive is the hope of returning to the homeland. There would be special rejoicing indeed. The following text attempts to describe the euphoric feelings of those who are allowed to return home.

“When the LORD brought back the captivity of Zion,
We were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
And our tongue with singing.
Then they said among the nations,
‘The LORD has done great things for them.’
The LORD has done great things for us,
And we are glad.”
Psalm 126:1-3

1. “When the Lord brought back the captivity of Zion”

a) It was the Lord who had sent Israel into captivity because of its wayward ways.
b) It was the Lord also who brought His people back home (Zion).

2. The nations

a) Gentile nations are in mind.
b) Grudgingly they accepted the fact that God Himself showed great mercy to Israel.
c) Thus they were able to return to the homeland (Nobody else can speak of the same thing).

3. “The LORD has done great things for us”

a) This must be acknowledged.
b) Through His mercy Zion was redeemed and its people returned home.

4. Gladness of heart

This was well-expressed. Euphoria was felt. Laughter came about naturally. Tongues were just bursting with songs of praise to God for His deliverance!
