SUPERSCRIPTION

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

We have another standard superscription where Davidic authorship is acknowledged. This psalm is entrusted to the Chief Musician.

A PLEA FOR DELIVERANCE

King David experienced troubles in life that few have ever encountered. In Psalm 140 he presents his problems to God. He pleads for Divine justice. Strong imprecatory elements are found in this Psalm.

1. Description of Enemies (Psalm 140:1-11)

a) They are evil.
b) They are violent.
c) They are wicked.

2. Description of their evil plans (Psalm 140:1-11)

a) They plan evil things from their hearts.
b) They sharpen their poisonous tongues.
c) The plan to cause their victims to stumble.
d) They set up snares to entrap their prey.
e) They plot wicked schemes.

3. Prayer for Preservation (Psalm 140: 6-7, 12-13)

a) Prayer to be preserved from the wicked and their evil plans.
b) Prayer that God would maintain the cause of the afflicted and the poor.
c) Prayer that the righteous would be preserved with great strength that they may dwell in God’s presence and give Him worship and praise.

4. Imprecatory prayer against the wicked (Psalm 140:9-11)

a) Let evil be the reward of the evil.
b) Let them fall into their own pits.
c) Let the evil slanderers never be established on earth.
