Day 354 – Psalm 144

“Blessed be the LORD my Rock…” Psalm 144:1a

SUPERSCRIPTION: A Psalm of David.

This simple superscription identifies King David as the author of the Psalm.

A RADIANT PSALM OF PRAISE

This Psalm is quite different from Psalms 142-143 where David struggled with dark negative emotions. Psalm 144 is a radiant Psalm of praise to the Lord.

1. Difficulties still exist (Psalm 144:7-8)

a) Difficulties are still steep for they are described as “great waters”.
b) Enemies were identified as “the hand of foreigners”.
c) They spoke with falsehood and lying tongues.

2. Determination to praise God despite difficulties (Psalm 144:1-2)

a) God is a great Protector.
i) This text (Psalm 144:1-2) is reminiscent of what David wrote in Psalm 18:1-2.
ii) David praised God that He has proven Himself faithful in His grace and mercy.
b) He will strengthen and enable David to give battle to enemies successfully.
i) This segment is reflective of Psalm 18.
ii) David drew much strength from his acquired knowledge of God.

3. Deep appreciation of God’s help (Psalm 144:3-4)

a) David is grateful that God would even take notice.
b) What is man in the sight of a great and mighty God?

4. Prayer to God to hear and answer prayer (Psalm 144:5-7)

a) To come down from heaven.
b) To stretch out His hand to deliver.
c) To destroy the wicked.
d) To reveal His power and glory through an act of mighty deliverance.
