Day 359 – Psalm 146

“Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul!” Psalm 146:1

A HAPPY PSALM OF PRAISE

We have another happy praise psalm. The author may be unknown but the content of the psalm is most familiar.

“Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul!
While I live I will praise the LORD;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man,
in whom there is no help.
His spirit departs, he returns to his earth;
In that very day his plans perish.”
Psalm 146:1-4

1. A determination to praise God

a) We are reminded of the opening words found in Psalm 103.
b) The psalmist challenges himself to offer praise to God.
c) This note of praise has an added element.
i) He is conscious of his human mortality.
ii) He does not know when he will die but he is fully aware that he will die one day.
iii) This consciousness heightens his determination to make praise a very strong part of his life on earth.

2. Learned from hard experiences of life

a) Perhaps once his trust was in “princes”.
b) But through experience he realizes the limitation of help from man.
c) What is a prince? He is only a man!
d) What is man?
i) He is but a human being whose spirit would one day depart.
ii) He will return to the earth from whence he came.
iii) The best of human plans perish when man dies.
