Day 109 – Psalm 16

“Their sorrows shall be multiplied…” Psalm 16:4

EMERGING GROUPS OF PEOPLE

As we read the Davidic Psalms, we begin to realize that the author had very clear and straightforward ideas about different groups of people. The following are easily identifiable:-

1. Negative

a) The wicked (Psalm 10)
b) The atheists who reject God (Psalm 14)

2. Positive

a) The godly poor (Psalm 12)
b) The saints of God (Psalm 16)

ANOTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE IDENTIFIED

We have another group of people identified in the following text.

“Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god:
Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer,
Nor take up their names on my lips.”

Psalm 16:4

1. “Another god”

a) David refused to acknowledge “another god”.
b) He absolutely refused to participate in idolatrous worship.
c) He would not offer “drink offerings of blood” (alien to Israel’s prescribed worship).
d) He would certainly not even mention the names of these “other gods” on his lips.
i) He would not take oaths in the names of other gods.
ii) He would not call upon these gods at any time.

2. “Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god” (Deuteronomy 8:19-20; 12:29-31; 32:17,21-27)

a) David intimates awareness of Mosaic teachings concerning the many gods of Canaan.
b) He notes with sadness that there were some in Israel who had turned to “other gods”.
