Day 125 – Psalm 18

“To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD, who spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said: (Superscription)” Psalm 18

THE LONGEST SUPERSCRIPTION

This is the longest superscription attached. The following things may be noted:-

1. Author

a) He is clearly identified as “David”.
b) He used his favourite title “the servant of the LORD” to describe himself (2 Samuel 7 where David used the word “servant” numerous times in his communion with God).

2. Essence of Psalm 18

a) This is essentially a prayer of thanksgiving.
b) This psalm was spoken out loud as a thanksgiving prayer to God.

3. Occasion

a) Deliverance from all his enemies.
b) Deliverance from his nemesis, King Saul.

4. Comparison

a) 2 Samuel 22 is very similar to Psalm 18.
b) Psalm 18 is a polished version of 2 Samuel 22.

5. Special features

a) A very personal psalm.
b) A psalm of special praise to God – in reflection of God’s mercy extended to him.
c) A highly instructive psalm (two features may be highlighted).
i) The Person of God is brilliantly portrayed.
ii) Principles of faith and life are spelt out.
