“May the name of the God of Jacob defend you” Psalm 20:1b

RELIGIOUS CEREMONY BEFORE A BATTLE

The practice of having religious elements before going into battle was not uncommon. There were good reasons why this religious ceremony was included.

1. In the days of Joshua

a) In the historic battle of Jericho (Joshua 6).
b) The priests were involved (Joshua 6).

2. The significance of the religious element

a) To remind Israel to seek God for His mercy.
b) To remind the king that victory was to be found in God.
c) To remind all involved in battle that God was The King who goes forth as the Commander of the Lord’s army (Joshua 5:13-15).
d) To remind Israel they had nothing to fear from their enemies if God’s blessing had been sought in humble prayer.

A SPECIAL PHRASE EMPLOYED

There was a special phrase that was employed in this religious ceremony before battle. This phrase was:

“May the LORD…”
Psalm 20:1, 5c
