“Do not be silent to me” Psalm 28:1b

A SIMPLE SUPERSCRIPTION

Psalm 28 has a simple superscription that read, “A Psalm of David.” This superscription simply ascribes authorship to David.

MANY WORRYING THOUGHTS

David had many worrying thoughts to deal with. On the one hand he was worried about his enemies plotting against him. On the other hand he was just as worried that God seemed to have chosen to remain “silent” to him.

ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM DIRECTLY

From long experience David knew that the best thing to do whenever he was worried was to address the matter forthrightly. This is well illustrated in the following text he penned.

“To You I will cry, O LORD my Rock.
Do not be silent to me, lest if You are silent to me,
I become like those who go down to the pit.”

“Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to You,
When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary.”

Psalm 28:1-2

UNDERSTANDING THE SILENCE OF GOD

David struggled with the silence of God. He knew the implications of God’s silence. The following thoughts were disturbing:-

1. God’s silence could mean that He was angry with David (Psalm 27:9).

2. God’s silence could mean that He had turned His face away from Hs servant (Psalm 27:9).

3. If God continued to remain silent he knew that before too long he would “go down to the pit.” Yes, he would be dead!

PLEADING EVEN MORE STRENUOUSLY

David refused to give in to his internal fears. Surely the best thing to do was to pray even more strenuously to the Lord!

1. He would not cease to cry to the Lord who was his Rock.

2. He would keep offering up supplications (earnest and humble prayers).

3. He would keep his hands lifted up in great humility towards God’s holy sanctuary.
