Day 275 – Psalm 35

“LORD, who is like You…?” Psalm 35:10b

REJOICING IN THE LORD’S SALVATION

Can one rejoice in the death of the wicked? How could David write about rejoicing after he prayed against the wicked as he did?

“And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD;
It shall rejoice in His salvation.
All my bones shall say, ‘LORD, who is like You,
Delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him,
Yes, the poor and the needy from him who plunders him?’ ”
Psalm 35:9-10

1. An honest reaction

a) There is no pretence about David’s joy when the wicked are judged by God.
b) He writes plainly that his soul is able to rejoice- even if it is in a very difficult context- one where the wicked is judged and condemned by the Lord.
c) His deep sense of joy is found in the Lord and in His salvation (deliverance from the wicked).

2. Rejoicing in the Lord

a) “LORD, who is like You?”
i) David’s focus is on the Person of the LORD Himself.
ii) There is none like the LORD who upheld justice as He did.
b) Delivering the poor and needy.
i) They would have no recourse to justice from the human courts of law.
ii) Their plight is made the more painful because of corruption in the land.
iii) If God did not deliver the poor and needy from their strong oppressors many would have perished

3. No hypocrisy

It would have been hypocritical of David had he pretended to sorrow over the justice meted out against the powerful wicked who oppressed the poor and needy! He chose instead to be true to himself- he would rejoice in God and in His Divine justice.
