Day 309 – Psalm 38

“For in You, O LORD, I hope…” Psalm 38:15a

TOTALLY NUMBED

David felt totally numbed by what he was experiencing. This was how he sought to convey in the following text.

“But I, like a deaf man, do not hear;
And I am like a mute who does not open his mouth.
Thus I am like a man who does not hear,
And in whose mouth is no response.”
Psalm 38:13-14

1. Two pitiful imageries employed

a) A deaf man who does not hear.
b) A mute who cannot respond.

2. Images that evoke compassion

David believed that God would not be unresponsive as he poured out the anguish he felt in his heart!

BELIEVING THAT GOD WOULD HEAR HIS PLEA

David pleaded to be heard! He believed that God would hear and respond to his prayers!

“For in You, O LORD, I hope;
You will hear, O LORD, my God.
For I said, ‘Hear me, lest they rejoice over me,
Lest, when my foot slips, they exalt themselves against me.’ ”
Psalm 38:15-16

1. Basis of belief

a) Because God was his Covenant-LORD.
b) Because the LORD was his “personal God” (a relationship of faith).
c) Because of his faith in God there was a prevailing sense of “hope”.

2. Desperate plight felt

a) David’s enemies would gloat over their victory (“rejoice over me”).
b) His enemies were just waiting for him to slip and they would then exalt themselves against him.
