Day 12 – Psalm 43

“Vindicate me, O God…” Psalm 43:1a

AUTHORSHIP OF PSALM 43

Psalm 43 does not name its author. However, through a careful study of the language of Psalm 42 and Psalm 43, we recognize much similarity. It is not unsafe to assume that Psalm 43 was also written by the same author(s), the sons of Korah.

A PLEA FOR DIVINE VINDICATION

The theme of Psalm 43 is a natural step up from Psalm 42. The writer pleads with God for Divine vindication, instead of being gripped by feelings of despair.

“Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause
against an ungodly nation;
Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!”
Psalm 43:1

The psalmist had to fight off depressive feelings when he was taunted by his enemies (Psalm 42). Having found renewed faith in the Lord after shrugging off feelings of depression, he now turns to God for Divine vindication.

1. “Vindicate me, O God”

a) A court room scene may be imagined.
b) The accusers are the enemies.
c) The psalmist pleads as the defendant.
d) God Himself is the Divine Judge who can vindicate him.

2. Wicked plaintiffs

a) An ungodly nation
b) The deceitful man
c) The unjust man

3. Prayer for deliverance

God as the Divine Judge would be able to vindicate the psalmist who pleads “a just cause”!
But he seeks more than Divine vindication; he pleads that the Lord would deliver him from all his troubles.
