Day 22 – Psalm 44

“I will not trust in my bow…” Psalm 44:6

REFUSAL TO TRUST IN SELF

Wars were often won or lost depending on the weaponry possessed and employed by the army. All armies prided themselves in their archers, their swordsmen, their chariots etc. The psalmist reminded Israel never to trust in themselves or their weapons in times of war.

“For I will not trust in my bow,
Nor shall my sword save me.”
Psalm 44:6

REMEMBERING A HISTORIC BATTLE

One of the most famous battles in the war annals of ancient Israel must have been the battle between David and Goliath.

1. The weaponry of the giant Goliath (3 meters tall- 1 Samuel 17:4)

a) The weight of Goliath’s armour was about 78 kg (1 Samuel 17:5-6).
b) The weight of his spear-head was about 10 kg (1 Samuel 17:7).

2. David’s weaponry

a) A shepherd’s staff
b) Five stones and a sling (1 Samuel 17:40)

3. David’s trust was in the name of the Lord

David’s trust was in the name of the Lord when he went forth to battle Goliath. His famous words were well recorded in the following text.

“Then David said to the Philistine,
‘You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin.
But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts,
The God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.'”
1 Samuel 17:45

4. A vital lesson

David wanted all Israel to know a mighty truth that day.

“Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save
with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s…”
1 Samuel 17:47

This was a truth that was not lost on the sons of Korah. Trust in God was vital!
