Day 29 – Psalm 44

“You make us a reproach to our neighbours…” Psalm 44:13

THE BOOK OF LEVITICUS

The Book of Leviticus was especially written for the Levites. This book was meant to equip the Levites for ministry. Leviticus offers many important insights as to how to worship and serve the Lord. Leviticus would be of particular importance with reference to why and how God would chastise Israel if the nation chose to walk contrary to God’s laws. Psalm 44 however does not reflect any significance reference to the Book of Leviticus!

FOCUS ON SORROWS

The sons of Korah could not think beyond the pain and sorrow they felt!

“You make us a reproach to our neighbours,
A scorn and a derision to those all around us.”
Psalm 44:13

1. “You make us a reproach”

a) There was a subtle sense of reproach of God in this statement.
b) There was difficulty in accepting why God had to make Israel a reproach!
c) In fact there was strong resistance to God and His dealings with Israel.

2. How the neighbouring countries regarded Israel

a) A reproach
The nations had no regard for Israel!
b) A scorn
Israel was scorned!
c) A derision
The nation of God was derided by all who knew her!

SOME LIGHT SHED

If the sons of Korah had turned to Leviticus 26, perhaps they would have had a better comprehension as to why Israel was in such a state! God had warned of very strong negative measures that He would take against Israel, “if (they) do not obey Him… and if (they) despise (His) statutes, or if (their) soul abhors (His) judgments” (Leviticus 26:14-15). When things go badly wrong, the wisest course of action should be to search our hearts for sin, and not be reproaching God!
