Day 46 – Psalm 45

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever…” Psalm 45:6

A MESSIANIC APPLICATION

Psalm 45 took on a significant turn in the following text. The focus of the psalm began to feature Messianic elements.

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.”
Psalm 45:6

1. “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever”

a) The throne is a reference to the King.
b) The King here is identified as “God”.
c) His throne is an eternal one.
d) This ascription does not fit any of the kings of ancient Israel.

2. “A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom”

a) No scepter of any earthly king of Israel can be described as altogether “righteous”.
b) This feature of righteousness would be standard feature in the reign of the Messiah-King.

SIGNIFICANT CROSS-REFERENCES

The author of the Book of Hebrews applies Psalm 45:6 to Jesus, the Son of God most boldly.

“But to the Son He says:
‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.'”
Hebrews 1:8

What is the basis of this application?

1. Divine inspiration from the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10-16).

2. Inductive reasoning from the Scriptures (Isaiah 9:6; Daniel 8:13-14).

3. Logical conclusion after careful examination of texts relating to the Messiah and His reign as King.
