Day 108 – Psalm 50

“But I will rebuke you…” Psalm 50:21c

THE SILENCE OF GOD

God had seemed to be silent, at least for a while. The wicked interpreted the silence of God wrongly.

“These things you have done, and I kept silent;
You thought that I was altogether like you:
But I will rebuke you, and set them in order before your eyes.”
Psalm 50:21

1. “These things you have done”

a) The sins of the wicked were well known.
b) The wicked could not deny these charges.

2. “And I kept silent”

a) There were reasons why God had kept silent.
b) God had already given laws to the nation.
c) These laws were meant to be enforced.
d) The laws of God should have stopped the wicked in their tracks.

3. “You thought that I was altogether like you”

a) This does not mean that the wicked believed that God was essentially concerned.
b) They did not believe that God really cared about human life on earth.
c) They thought that God would not involve Himself with the affairs of life.
d) There is a subtle hint that this erroneous view of God could be traced to the false religions (some gods were known to have devotees commit evil deeds as part of their religion).

4. “But I will rebuke you and set them in order before your eyes”

God will first issue this word of rebuke. He will then go about setting things in order in the nation. The judicial and religious aspects must be restored!
