“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity…” Psalm 51:5a

DEEP REFLECTION

The confession of sin should never be a shallow religious exercise. David shows himself to be a man of deep reflection as he ponders the problem of sin in his life.

NO SHIFTING OF BLAME

Many offer all kinds of “reasons” as to why people sin. The following are often cited to mitigate the problem of sin.

1. Blaming of circumstances (society, acquaintances etc)

2. Blaming of Satan (in some circles, Satan is always seen as the culprit)

UNDERSTANDING THE HUMAN NATURE

David offers a profound thought in the following text as to why sin afflicts us so much.

“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.”
Psalm 51:5

1. A sobering thought

a) The concept of “original sin” is introduced here.
b) All of us are brought forth in iniquity.
c) Everyone is born with a sinful human nature.

2. Well borne out in life

a) We do not need to teach children to sin.
b) Sin naturally arises in them.

3. Clarification

a) David was not blaming his mother.
b) He was not excusing himself by stating there he was born sinful. He was just making a very solemn observation about the deadliness of sin.
