Day 123 – Psalm 51

“Uphold me by Your generous Spirit…” Psalm 51:12b

A PLEA FOR FULL RESTORATION

David sought much more than cleansing from sin. It may be said that David was looking for full restoration. The following text represents his idea of full restoration.

1. The problem of sin must first be dealt with.

a) David pleaded with God to blot out sin and transgression (Psalm 51:1c, 9).
b) He also pleaded for a thorough cleansing from his sins (Psalm 51:3, 7).

2. The question of restoration can only be understood along the following lines:-

a) There is a deep comprehension of truth and wisdom (Psalm 51:6).
b) A new heart must replace the old sinful one (Psalm 51:10a).
c) A new and steadfast spirit must now prevail (Psalm 51:10b).
d) There is an acute and fresh sense of appreciation of the Person and Ministry of the Spirit of God (Psalm 51:11-12).

A HUMBLE PLEA TO BE UPHELD

David knew that he had to play his role and fulfill his part. But over and beyond all his human efforts, the Spirit of God must ultimately uphold the chastened child of God.

“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.”
Psalm 51:12

1. “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation”

The return of joy would be a great indicator of full restoration. Salvation (deliverance) would be experienced in a fresh new way. Joy from the Lord would accompany His deliverance.

2. “Uphold me by Your generous Spirit”

David knew that it would take much more than forgiveness and cleansing to make good in faith and life. The Holy Spirit, here called “Your generous Spirit” must be acknowledged as the prime mover in our battle against sin!

How thankful we must be that God would give us His Spirit as our Seal and Guarantee that we will never be cast away from God’s sight!
