Day 161 – Psalm 55

“Let death seize them…” Psalm 55:15a

MANY CONFLICTING EMOTIONS

Many emotions were felt as David went through a very tough time in his life. He needed to spend much time in contemplation. Three particularly strong feelings may be highlighted:-

1. Fear Psalm 55:1-5

2. Sadness Psalm 55:12-14

3. Anger Psalm 55:9, 15

A STRONGLY-WORDED PRAYER

The more David thought about his wicked enemies, the stronger were his words uttered in prayer.

“Let death seize them;
Let them go down alive into hell,
For wickedness is in their dwellings
and among them.”
Psalm 55:15

1. “Let death seize them”

a) This expresses the depth of David’s anger.
b) Death would be a penalty that God could mete out against the wicked.

2. “Let them go down alive into hell”

a) David’s anger was in danger of gaining an upper hand in his life.
b) He was virtually asking God to visit the wicked with an untimely death.
c) God dealt with the wicked in very severe ways in the days of Moses (The sons of Korah were swallowed up by the earth, literally fulfilling what David described here; Numbers 16).

3. “For wickedness is in their dwellings and among them”

a) David reasons that wickedness dwelt among his enemies.
b) They ought to be severely dealt with in order that their wickedness may be abruptly stopped.
