“In the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge…” Psalm 57:1c

THE CALAMITIES OF LIFE

With strong media facilities we have a greater degree of knowledge about the calamities that afflict the world. The psalmist David’s “calamities” related to the enemies he had to face. Those who live in countries where strife and violence abound will be able to relate easily to what David wrote. But the truth contained in the text below applies to all who need to find refuge in calamitous times.

“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me!
For my soul trusts in You;
And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge,
Until these calamities have passed by.”
Psalm 57:1

1. Facing Calamities

a) There is acceptance of “calamities” (as a part of life, unfortunate though that may be).
b) There is however no despair.
c) There is quiet belief that calamities will not last forever.
d) In due time the worst of calamities will pass away.

2. Facing calamities with God

a) Pleading the mercies of God is a good way to start.
b) Practising trust in God is an absolute necessity.
c) Turning to God for Refuge makes great sense.

3. Facing calamities with a strong and comforting thought

a) David chose the idea of “shadow of Your wings” as the perfect image of refuge.
b) As he faced his present calamity he found comforting assurance from this imagery.
c) As little chicks found peace in the safety of the wings of the mother-bird, so David found comfort in the knowledge that he was safe under God’s wings.
