Day 180 – Psalm 57

“I will cry out to God Most High…” Psalm 57:2a

THE CONCEPT OF “TRUST”

The theme of “Trust” comes up time and again in the Book of Psalms. Why do the psalmists bring up this theme so often? It becomes obvious that the idea of “trust” is perhaps more fluid and illusive than thought. The psalmist certainly speaks of his soul trusting the Lord (Psalm 57:1b), yet in the next breath he speaks of crying out to God.

“I will cry out to God Most High,
To God who performs all thing for me.”
Psalm 57:2

1. “I will cry out to God Most High”

a) Crying out to God again and again is not necessarily a sign of distrust.
b) Crying out to God is in fact a good indication of trust.
i) There is trust that crying out to God would not be in vain.
ii) There is trust that crying out to God would result in Divine help being sent.
iii) Crying out to God may be seen as the most natural instinct of the soul.
c) Crying out to God Most High
i) Trust is expressed in the Lord by the employing of the title “God Most High”.
ii) This term reflects a deep knowledge of God.
iii) Trust is enhanced by the innovation of a special title dear to the heart of the psalmist.

2. To God who performs all things to me

a) Trust is further deepened by recalling what God had done in the past.
b) God had indeed performed many wonderful things for David.
i) God had enabled him, where he was but a young lad to defeat the giant Goliath.
ii) God had preserved him from all evil all his life.
