Day 193 – Psalm 58

“Break their teeth…” Psalm 58:6a

PERSONAL ENCOUNTERS WITH WICKEDNESS

David knew just how evil his wicked enemies were. His knowledge was not theoretical but from personal experience! How does one practically deal with the unrepentant wicked?

AN IMPASSIONED PRAYER

David offered an impassioned plea to God. This prayer must be carefully studied.

“Break their teeth in their mouth, O God!
Breakout the fangs of the young lions, O LORD!”
Psalm 58:6

1. O God! O LORD!

a) This was an imprecatory prayer.
b) However it is not a demand made on God.
c) This prayer may be impassioned but it is still a prayer.
d) It has to be submitted to God as Lord.
e) It is subjected to the following:-
i) To the sovereign will of God.
ii) To the profound wisdom of God.
iii) To the prerogative of God to decide as He deems best.

2. The imagery of “young lions”

This imagery is used to highlight the following:-

a) Power of young lions.
b) Savagery of these predators.

3. Break their teeth… break their fangs

a) A prayer to God to remove the power of the enemies.
b) A prayer to render the enemies “toothless” and therefore unable to inflict harm.

How God would answer this prayer is left unanswered! David would do his part in praying. He was wise to leave the ultimate answer to the Lord God. This is how all prayer must be made, even the most impassioned of pleas! There is complete submission to God!
