Day 200 – Psalm 59

“Awake to help me, and behold!” Psalm 59:4b

UNPREPARED AND ILL-EXPERIENCED

David began life as a shepherd boy. Suddenly he found himself propelled into a political intrigue where his life was now at risk. He found himself unprepared for the sudden turn of events. He had hardly any experience dealing with men like King Saul and his bloodthirsty soldiers!

FIGHTING FEARS FROM WITHIN AND WITHOUT

Who could he trust in such circumstances? Soldiers whom he had fought with were now the enemies. He knew that King Saul would employ all resources available to kill him. There was no place where he could feel safe. Not even in his own home! The wisest thing would be to cry out to God for deliverance!

“They run and prepare themselves through no fault of mine,
Awake to help me, and behold!”
Psalm 59:4

TWO CONTRASTING PICTURES

David drew two contrasting pictures in the above text.

1. Active enemies

a) “They run”
i) The servants of King Saul were running to fulfil his command to kill David.
ii) David understood how important it was to do things swiftly if an attack was to be successful; any delay may result in the escape of the intended quarry.
b) “Prepare themselves”
i) All military operations would be carefully prepared.
ii) All details had to be looked into to ensure success.
c) “Through no fault of mine”
i) Once again David pleaded innocence.
ii) He was not guilty of any fault that could justify this assassination attempt.

2. An inactive God

a) “Awake to help me, and behold!”
David wondered why God had not come to his rescue yet!
b) Had God even beheld the dire plight David was in?
