Day 216 – Psalm 60

“God has spoken in His holiness…” Psalm 60:6a

A VERY CLEAR WORD FROM GOD

As David prayed and fought the enemies that threatened the security of the nation of Israel, there came a stirring word from God.

“God has spoken in His holiness:
‘I will rejoice; I will divide Shechem and measure
out the Valley of Succoth.
Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the helmet for My head; Judah is My lawgiver.
Moab is My washpot; over Edom I will cast My shoe;
Philistia, shout in triumph because of Me.'”
Psalm 60:6-8

1. God has spoken in His holiness

a) God’s word is ever spoken in holiness and this may be fully trusted.
b) God’s joy in declaring His word must be noted.

2. Sovereignty of God asserted and established

a) The land of Israel was the Lord’s (Shechem, Gilead, Manasseh).
b) The right of assigning roles to different tribes belonged to God alone.
i) Ephraim is the helmet.
ii) Judah is the lawgiver.

3. The enemies of Israel are counted as “nothing”

a) Moab was a mere washpot. (Why should this puny nation be feared?)
b) Edom was not to be feared for it is only a place where God casts His shoe.
c) Philistia was not to be feared because of their war cries.
i) Some enemies sought to intimidate by their war cries.
ii) They assume triumph even before they go into battle.
iii) This confidence of the Philistine army unnerved many.
d) Israel was reminded that all triumphs come from the Lord Himself. If He so determined, Philistia would be victorious. On the other hand, He could also cause the Philistines to lose in battle.

THE CHALLENGE FROM GOD

This challenge was obvious. David and Israel must hold fast to their faith in God at all times!
