“For You have been a shelter for me…” Psalm 61:3a

KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

Any knowledge of God is good and precious. Theoretical knowledge has its own value. Experiential knowledge of God enhances and strengthens our faith in Him. In times of great distress our knowledge of God can stand us in good stead.

“For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.”
Psalm 61:3

1. “For You have been…”

a) David recalled his past experiences with God.
b) His knowledge of God stood him in good stead in his hour of distress.

2. “A shelter for me”

a) God had proven Himself to be a strong and safe “shelter” for David.
b) In the worst and toughest of times God had come through for him.
c) The recall of how God had helped him in the past gave him the confidence to cry out in prayer once again

3. “A strong tower”

a) The idea of “a shelter” and “a strong tower” are beautifully combined.
b) God was both “shelter” and “a strong tower” to all who trust Him.
c) A shelter offers safety and protection.
d) A strong tower suggests even more. The enemy would never be able to successfully assault and conquer a strong tower protected by God Himself.

4. “From the enemy”

a) There were always enemies.
b) These enemies were from without and within the nation.
c) Some enemies were very powerful and deadly.
d) Nevertheless God had always delivered David from the wicked hands of his enemies.
