“Blessed be God…” Psalm 66:19a

DEEP GRATITUDE

Psalm 66 beautifully concludes with a humble and heartfelt word of adoration of God.

“Blessed be God,
Who has not turned away my prayer,
Nor His mercy from me!”
Psalm 66:20

1. “Blessed be God”

a) This is always uttered with deep adoration.
b) There is great gratitude felt in the heart.

2. “Who has not turned away my prayer”

a) God has Divine prerogative
i) He can hear and answer a prayer.
ii) He can also refuse to hear and answer a prayer.
b) A prayer heard and answered
i) This should evoke an appropriate response.
ii) One should say with all humility and gratitude “Blessed be God”.

3. “Nor His mercy from me”

a) Ultimately God hears and answers prayers on the basis of His mercy.
b) Understanding the mercy of God is one of the most humbling of lessons.

PRECIOUS TEXTS HIGHLIGHTING GOD’S MERCY

Many precious texts abound in the Book of Psalms about the mercies of God. Two may be highlighted:-

1. Pleading the mercies of God

“Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses,
For they are from of old.”
Psalm 25:6

2. He is our God of mercy

“To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises;
For God is my defense, My God of mercy.”
Psalm 59:17
