Day 280 – Psalm 68

“Let His enemies be scattered…” Psalm 68:1b

A HIGHLY PROBABLE CONTEXT

Sometimes the superscription of a psalm would give us a clue as to when and why a particular psalm was written. However, clues are not limited to superscriptions. Another way of figuring out the historical context of a psalm would be to look at the language employed.

“Let God arise,
Let His enemies be scattered;
Let those also who hate Him flee before Him.”
Psalm 68:1

1. “Let God arise”

These words hark back to an ancient invocation uttered by Moses:

“So it was, whenever the ark set out, that Moses said:
‘Rise up, O LORD!
Let Your enemies be scattered,
And let those who hate You flee before You.'”
Numbers 10:35

2. The significance of this invocation

a) It has reference to the Ark of the Lord.
b) The Ark housed the sacred stone tablets God gave to Moses.
c) The Ark represented the Presence of the Lord.
d) The invocation calls upon the Lord to make His presence felt.
i) His enemies would then be surely scattered.
ii) Those who hate Him would have to flee before the Lord.
iii) Who could stand up to the might of God?

3. The Historical Attempt to bring the Ark of the Lord into Jerusalem

a) The context for the writing of Psalm 68 would be the occasion of bringing the Ark of the Lord into Jerusalem.
b) This glorious occasion was recorded in 2 Samuel 6.
c) The Ark of the Lord was appropriately brought into Jerusalem with joy.
