Day 282 – Psalm 68

“But let the righteous be glad…” Psalm 68:3a

HISTORY AND FAITH

Israel had a great national religion. Israel’s history and religion were closely tied together. Yet sadly, the nation never found much joy in their faith in God. So many things had gone wrong for the nation. A few problems may be highlighted:-

1. The Philistines had caused great suffering in the country.

2. The misrule of King Saul had only caused the nation’s fortunes to plummet further.

3. The national religion of Israel was not well respected because of the poor priestly system.

AN ATTEMPT AT SPIRITUAL RESTORATION

David determined that he would do his part to help Israel find spiritual restoration. One of the things he determined to do was to bring the Ark of the Lord into the Capital- Jerusalem. Through celebration and teaching, David wanted Israel to regain the joy of faith in God.

“But let the righteous be glad;
Let them rejoice before God;
Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly.”
Psalm 68:3

1. “But let the righteous be glad”

a) This was a call to the righteous to come to the fore.
b) Surely they would be glad that the Ark of the Lord was now in Jerusalem.
c) There was every reason to be glad- the Ark was truly a National Treasure.

2. “Let them rejoice before God”

a) This is a reference to joy in worship.
b) This is also a reference to personal joy.

3. “Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly”

a) Joy through faith in God should result in exceeding joy.
b) This was David’s personal experience; he desired the nation to experience this joy!
