Day 284 – Psalm 68

“A father of the fatherless…” Psalm 68:5a

A BRIEF BUT GLORIOUS DESCRIPTION OF GOD

What was it about God that made David to rejoice so much? The following text will help us understand just why David the psalmist-king called on Israel to rejoice in their faith in God.

“A father of the fatherless,
A defender of widows,
Is God in His holy habitation.

God sets the solitary in families;
He brings out those who are bound into prosperity;
But the rebellious dwell in a dry land.”
Psalm 68:5-6

1. “Is God in His holy habitation”

a) This phrase describes what God is in essence.
b) The word “habitation” is not a reference to His dwelling place (not in this context).
c) It describes what God is “at home” doing.

2. Four things that God would do for those who trust in Him:-

a) He is a father to the fatherless.
b) He is a defender of the widows.
c) He sets those who are “solitary” in families. (This is another description of those who have suffered severe bereavement. It is similar to the word “fatherless”.) He enables “the solitary” to find “family”.
d) God will give help to those who are trapped or bound by problems brought on by poverty. He will help them obtain “prosperity”. (It is important to take note that the Lord is not promising that every believer would be wealthy.)

3. “But the rebellious dwell in a dry land”

a) This is a direct contrast to the earlier promises recorded in the same text.
b) Those who rebel against the Lord cannot expect God’s blessings. They will indeed dwell “in a dry land”.
