“This is the mountain which God desires to dwell in…” Psalm 68:16b

ENVIOUS OF ISRAEL

Many were the enemies of Israel. David offered this suggestion as to why Israel was attacked so frequently.

“Why do you fume with envy, you mountains of many peaks?
This is the mountain which God desires to dwell in;
Yes, the LORD will dwell in it forever.”
Psalm 68:16

1. “Why do you fume with envy, you mountains of many peaks”

a) “Mountains of many peaks”
i) A metaphorical reference to mighty nations.
ii) A mountain was often used as a symbol of strength.
iii) A mountain of many peaks would describe a strong nation.
b) “Why do you fume with envy”
i) Israel began as a very small and insignificant nation.
ii) Yet, before too long, it had won a great reputation because of its many conquests of stronger and more powerful nations.
iii) Moreover Israel had developed itself a nation well and had become very prosperous.
iv) Many nations were envious of the prosperity and strength of Israel.

2. “This is the mountain which God desires to dwell in”

a) This is a reference to Mount Zion (Jerusalem).
b) This was where God had chosen to dwell in (Psalm 48).

3. “Yes, the LORD will dwell in it forever”

a) This was revealed to David (2 Samuel 7:10).
b) This was confirmed in Solomon’s time (2 Chronicles 7:12-16).
