“And will break in pieces the oppressors.” Psalm 72:4c
BATTLING EVIL
Evil must be fought at every level. Evil has many forms and a righteous king must spare no effort to uphold justice in the land. This was a commitment that Solomon made in prayer as he was crowned king.
“And will break in pieces the oppressors.” Psalm 72:4c
1. The Oppressors
Solomon had seen these oppressors in the reign of his father, King David. Two may be cited as examples.
a) There were external oppressors (e.g. The Philistines, 2 Samuel 21:15).
b) There were the wicked (e.g. King Saul, 2 Samuel 22:1).
2. The danger that oppressors posed
The following hazards may be highlighted:-
a) The innocent suffer.
b) Peace is taken away.
c) Prosperity of the land diminishes.
d) Lives are destroyed.
e) The nation becomes weak and will be prey to marauding nations.
3. And will break in pieces the oppressors
a) Solomon will exercise all the power he possessed as king to oppose oppressors.
i) Judicial authority
ii) Military might
b) The kingdom must be defended at all costs.
i) Oppressors would be broken into pieces.
ii) They must know that a righteous king would also be a strong one.
