“His name shall endure forever…” Psalm 72:17a

THE GOOD AND IMMORTAL NAME OF THE KING

“A good name is better than precious ointment!” Thus Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 7:1. How absolutely true this is! The name of the Messiah-King must be extolled.

“His name shall endure forever;
His name shall continue as long as the sun.
And men shall be blessed in Him;
All nations shall call Him blessed.”
Psalm 72:17

1. The extolling of the name of the Redeemer King

a) This is most appropriate.
b) This is attempted in this text.

2. “His name shall endure forever”

a) The good name of the Redeemer King shall indeed endure forever.
b) The redeemed must ever extol His name.

3. “His name shall continue as long as the sun”

a) This is the heart-felt wish of the redeemed.
b) This is a complementary expression of the first one.

4. “And men shall be blessed in Him”

a) All shall be blessed (men and women).
b) The word “men” is employed representatively.
c) The blessings we receive in life are to be found in our Redeemer.

5. “All nations shall call Him blessed”

a) This is as it should be.
b) All who have been blessed ought to bless the gracious Redeemer King.
