Day 17 – Psalm 73

“If I had said, ‘I will speak thus… ” Psalm 73:15a

PRIVATE MUSING

Asaph knew that he was walking in a very dark place. This psalm began as private musing. It was not ready for the public to read his yet unfinished psalm.

“If I had said, ‘I will speak thus,’
Behold, I would have been untrue to the generation
of Your children.”
Psalm 73:15

1. “If I had said, “I will speak thus'”

a) Asaph was entitled to his personal private thoughts.
b) And in his private musing he had to struggle with many dark thoughts.
i) It seemed that his attempts to live a good and clean life was in vain.
ii) It seemed as if the life of the rich… was more inviting.
c) What if he had indeed come to this conclusion?
d) Could he have published a psalm that ended with verse 14?

2. “Behold, I would have been untrue to the generation of Your children”

a) “Behold”
i) Asaph knew that he had to struggle on.
ii) His private thoughts must be separated from that which would become public reading.
b) “I would have been untrue”
i) Asaph would have been untrue to his calling as a Levite.
ii) He would have failed to fulfil his calling to teach Israel about trust in God.
c) “The generation of Your children”

A whole generation would have been adversely affected. Asaph knew that he would have to dig even deeper than his present level of thoughts and feelings! There must be an answer to his dark thoughts!
