“Whom have I in heaven but You?” Psalm 73:25a

HEAVEN AS A PRECIOUS REALITY

To many, heaven appears unreal. Hence the focus is life on earth. While the Old Testament writers in the main, focused their attention to teach people how to live faithfully for God on earth, it does not mean that there was no belief about the life hereafter. The following text is evidence of strong faith in the afterlife- in heaven.

“Whom have I in heaven but You?
And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.”
Psalm 73:25

1. “Whom have I in heaven but You?”

a) What this phrase does not mean.
i) It does not mean that heaven is sparsely populated.
ii) It does not mean that only God is to be found in heaven.
b) What it does mean.
i) The psalmist is confident that God has prepared heaven for the faithful.
ii) But he looks forward to seeing the Most Important Person in heaven- God Himself.
iii) Heaven is not just a wonderfully pleasant place for believers and their loved ones.
iv) Heaven should be desired and appreciated because God is there!

2. “And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You”

a) This expresses a new-found love for God.
b) The psalmist does not desire wealth and power that the wicked seek after.
c) He does not desire anything or anyone more than God Himself.

THE BLESSING OF MEDITATION ON GOD

Asaph found himself with a renewed sense of faith in God through meditation. He also found a renewed sense of love for the Lord!
