Day 49 – Psalm 74

“Arise, O God, plead Your own cause…” Psalm 74:22a

DRAWING UPON ALL RESOURCES AVAILABLE

The psalmist must be commended for his prayer effort. He pleaded on everything he knew. The following may be highlighted:-

1. Pleaded on the basis of being God’s redeemed (Psalm 74:2).

2. Pleaded on the basis of justice against evil wrongdoers who had devastated the land and the Temple of God (Psalm 74:3-8).

3. Pleaded the Sovereignty of God (Psalm 74:12).

4. Pleaded the Compassionate love of God (Psalm 74:19).

5. Pleaded the covenant of God (Psalm 74:20).

6. Pleaded the plight of the poor and needy (Psalm 74:21).

ONE MORE PLEA TO ENTER

There was one more plea that the psalmist entered in the following text:-

“Arise, O God, plead Your own cause;
Remember how the foolish man reproaches You daily.”
Psalm 74:22

1. “Arise, O God, plead Your own cause”

a) “Arise” is an urgent plea to God to take action against the wicked.
b) Why did God not attend to his pleas?
c) Perhaps there was a cause that would move God to take action.
d) That cause was not known to the psalmist.
e) The psalmist just wanted God to deliver His people from further humiliation and destruction.

2. “Remember how the foolish man reproaches You daily”

a) This “foolishness” is immoral and deliberate.
b) The wicked had rejected wisdom and had chosen to follow his own ways even if that was foolish.
c) Few things could be more foolish than to reproach God on a daily basis!
(e.g. Cursing and swearing at God… which is a modern day problem)
