“The stouthearted were plundered…” Psalm 76:5a

THE MIGHT OF THE ENEMY

Armies in ancient days prided themselves in the soldiers they had. The following text gives us a glimpse of the men who made up the armies of Babylon.

“The stouthearted were plundered;
They have sunk into their sleep;
And none of the mighty men have found the use of their hands.”
Psalm 76:5

1. A brief description of the soldiers

a) They were stouthearted.
i) They were courageous in battle.
ii) They were fearless.
b) They were mighty men.
i) Physically they were bigger and stronger than others.
ii) They were renown in battle.
c) The use of their hands.
i) They were skilled in handling weapons.
ii) They were formidable in employing weapons of war.

2. To what were they reduced when God was engaged in battle against them?

a) The stouthearted were plundered.
i) They were soundly defeated.
ii) Their possessions were plundered.
b) They were sunk in sleep.
They may be compared to people totally unprepared for war. They were caught sleeping.
c) They found they could not wield their weapons effectively.
d) God could well have caused their hearts to fail because of deep fear.

“And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms… will be as
when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.”
