Day 77 – Psalm 77

“My soul refused to be comforted.” Psalm 77:2c

A CHALLENGING THOUGHT

Many of us look for comfort. We would be so pleased if we can find some measure of comfort in times of trouble. Yet we see Asaph penning these words even as he prayed to God in his day of trouble.

“In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord;
My hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing;
My soul refused to be comforted.”
Psalm 77:2

WHERE THE SOUL KNOWS NO COMFORT

Let us consider some possible reasons why Asaph spoke of his soul refusing to be comforted.

1. The depth of sorrow felt

a) Asaph must have felt affliction of his soul.
b) The trouble that he was experiencing must have affected him deeply.

2. Rejecting “easy comfort”

a) Some may have been glad for some measure of relief.
b) The heart and mind may look for “easy comfort”.
c) Asaph’s soul rejected superficial comfort.
i) Consoling words from well-meaning friends.
ii) Finding solace in “comfort food”.

3. Determination to seek a deeper answer

a) Asaph was in tune with his soul’s needs and desires.
b) He was not a superficial person.
c) His soul must find deep answers from God.
d) Till then his soul would continue to refuse “easy or superficial comfort”.

A DEEP AND NOBLE SOUL

Asaph was a well-trained Levite. He knew his faith and his God well. His soul had learned to wait upon God. He knew when his soul was deeply troubled. He knew when it was in anguish. He knew that his soul would push him to seek deeper answers from God in prayer, than to be satisfied with superficial comfort. He would continue to seek God in prayer till his soul found deep comfort.
