Day 80 – Psalm 77

“I complained…” Psalm 77:3c

A COMPLAINING DISPOSITION

Many assume that complaining is an essential right of a human being. Once this thought is applied to the extreme a complaining disposition develops.

“I remembered God, and was troubled;
I complained…”
Psalm 77:3a,b,c

1. A bitter history

Israel had a bitter history of complaining from the earliest time. Let us take a quick look at the way the complaining spirit played out in the days of Moses. Two incidents may be highlighted:-

a) At a place called Marah (Exodus 15:22-27).
i) Almost immediately after their historic exodus from Egypt.
ii) A water-shortage problem occurred.
iii) The first thing Israel did was to complain (Exodus 15:24).
b) In the wilderness of Sin (Exodus 16).
i) The people had forgotten how God had just recently provided water for them.
ii) They had a new complaint about the lack of bread (Exodus 16:2-3).
iii) Complaining was becoming a habit with the children of Israel.

2. The nature of “complaining”

a) The people complained against Moses (Exodus 15:24).
b) The complaint ultimately is against the Lord (so Moses explained- Exodus 16:7).

3. The complaining spirit of Asaph

a) Asaph caught himself complaining.
b) Somehow he was not satisfied.
i) Why had not God answered?
ii) Why had God remained silent?

The spirit of complaining is more deadly than many have realized!
