TEACHING METHODS

The ancient teachers were skillful in devising ways and means to help their pupils to learn.

“I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings of old.”
Psalm 78:2

1. “I will open my mouth in a parable”

a) Parables are essentially stories.
b) These are stories drawn from observations of life on earth.
c) Hidden in these parables are deep spiritual truths.
d) Asaph must have been a skilled teacher if he could teach through parables.

2. “I will utter dark sayings”

a) These “sayings” are actually proverbial in nature.
b) Proverbs are well-phrased pithy sayings.
c) Some are very hard to comprehend and thus they are called “dark sayings”.

3. A Master at Parables

a) Jesus was a Master at constructing and speaking parables.
b) His parables were crafted for ears to hear.
c) His parables were not always easy to comprehend.
d) His parables were always profound.

4. The hard sayings of Jesus

a) Some of the teachings of Jesus were straightforward and simple.
b) Some of His sayings proved very difficult for some hearers.
c) Those who did not work hard at understanding the teachings of Jesus would turn away with these words-

“This is a hard saying; who can understand it?”
