Day 116 – Psalm 78

“He led them…” Psalm 78:14a

GOD’S LEADING

The journey from Egypt to Canaan was fraught with danger. Mercifully, God personally led the children of Israel. And He did this in the most marvelous manner!

“In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
And all the night with a light of fire.”
Psalm 78:14

1. God’s mighty leading

a) How could Israel forget such miraculous Divine leading?
b) This truth was carefully emphasized in this text as a reminder of God’s leading.
c) God’s leading was noted by Moses.

“Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go,
that God did not lead them by way of the land of
the Philistines, although that was near; for God said,
‘Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they
see war, and return to Egypt.’

So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea.
And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out
of the land of Egypt.”
Exodus 13:17-18

2. “In the daytime also He led them with the cloud”

a) The pillar of cloud was visible to all and God used it to lead the way (Exodus 13:21).
i) Many would not be familiar with this route God had chosen.
ii) They would be grateful of the presence of the cloud, for it indicated that God was with them, leading them unerringly.
b) The pillar of cloud also played a special role at the Exodus of Israel from Egypt.
i) It stood between Israel and Egypt (Exodus 14:20).
ii) It became a dark cloud for the Egyptians, preventing them from seeing the movements of the children of Israel (Exodus 14:20).

3. “And all the night with a light of fire”

Like the cloud, the pillar of fire protected the children of Israel from any attacks attempted in the night. It also gave light when the march towards the Promised Land was made in the night.
