Day 132 – Psalm 78

“Then they remembered that God was their rock…” Psalm 78:35a

FORGETTING GOD

How was it possible for the children of Israel to forget all that God had done for the nation? This was a perennial problem. It was a problem that the prophets spoke of when they addressed the nation. Jeremiah was one such prophet who remarked on this.

“For they have perverted their way;
They have forgotten the LORD their God.”
Jeremiah 3:21b

REMEMBERING GOD

In a time of severe affliction, the children of Israel remembered God.

“Then they remembered that God was their rock,
And the Most High God their Redeemer.”
Psalm 78:35

1. “Then they remembered”

a) The remembering of God was coerced by the affliction suffered.
b) Remembering God at this juncture did not arise from affectionate memory.
c) The children of Israel had no alternative but to return to basics.

2. “That God was their rock”

a) He was their rock against the might of the Pharaoh.
b) He was their rock in times of national crisis.
c) He was their rock from which flowed streams of living water.

3. “And the Most High God their Redeemer”

a) The Lord was The Most High God indeed (Genesis 14:19-20).
b) He was the Possessor of heaven and earth (Genesis 14:19).
c) He was the Redeemer
i) Of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob.
ii) Of Israel too.

These great truths were meant to be foremost in their mind. Instead these essential truths were only remembered because the children of Israel found themselves in serious trouble with God.
