Day 156 – Psalm 78

“He was furious…” Psalm 78:59a

THE FURY OF GOD

Asaph minced no words when he described God’s anger with the children of Israel.

“When God heard this, He was furious,
And greatly abhorred Israel,
So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh,
The tent He had placed among men.”
Psalm 78:59-60

1. “When God heard this, He was furious”

a) God’s fury was stated simply.
b) God had every right to be furious.

2. “Greatly abhorred Israel”

a) For turning away from their Covenant God.
b) For turning to useless idols who could do absolutely nothing for them.

3. “So that”

a) This signals God’s reaction.
b) He would now take action against the sinful idolatrous nation.

4. “The tabernacle”

a) The tabernacle is a reference to the special Sanctuary that God had Moses to erect.
b) Moses took great pains to erect the Tabernacle according to Divine specifications, for it represented the Presence of God with His people (Exodus 25-40).

5. “He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent He had placed among men”

a) The Tabernacle was established at Shiloh in the days of Joshua (Joshua 18:1).
b) It was at Shiloh that God raised up Samuel as His prophet (1 Samuel 3:20).
c) The Talmud (Jewish commentary of the Scriptures) declared that the Tabernacle was at Shiloh for 369 years (from the time of Joshua to the time of Samuel).
d) The forsaking of Shiloh was alluded to in this text, when the Ark of the Covenant was allowed to fall into the hands of the Philistines (1 Samuel 4).
