“Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us!” Psalm 79:8a

THE ROOT PROBLEM

Asaph knew why God’s anger was directed against Jerusalem. The root problem was “iniquity”.

“Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us!
Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us,
For we have been brought very low.”
Psalm 79:8

1. “Oh, do not remember”

a) The phrase “do not remember” has a plaintive cry to it.
b) If God were to remember all our sins, no one could stand before Him.

2. “Former iniquities against us”

a) Former iniquities
i) A reference to past sins.
ii) A reference to past sins that keep on being repeated.
iii) A reference to past sins that have not been dealt with.
b) Concerning iniquities
i) God had the right to recall past iniquities.
ii) He also had the right to charge Judah with sin upon sin (former and present sins).

3. “Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us”

a) There is an earnest cry for God’s tender mercies to be bestowed.
b) His mercy can cause Him to forgive “former iniquities”.
c) But God’s tender mercies must come speedily or life was over- completely.

4. “For we have been brought very low”

a) Jerusalem and its high walls were destroyed.
b) Many had been slain and left unburied.
c) How much lower could the nation fall?
