Day 216 – Psalm 82

“How long will you judge unjustly…” Psalm 82:2a

A SERIOUS PROBLEM

Asaph candidly addressed a serious problem that plagued ancient Israel.

“How long will you judge unjustly,
And show partiality to the wicked?”
Psalm 82:2

1. “How long will you judge unjustly”

a) Judging unjustly was a perennial problem.
i) Judging unjustly was the bane of ancient Israel.
ii) So many failed to uphold justice.
iii) It was an indictment against the kings and the judiciary.
b) This problem had deep and adverse significance:-
i) It was an ethical problem.
ii) It was also a moral-theological problem.

2. “And show partiality to the wicked”

a) The wicked should be judged according to the laws of God.
b) Often the wicked got away with their misdeeds.
i) The wicked resorted to wrong means to obtain wealth.
ii) With wealth they bribed judges.
iii) Judges then ruled in the favour of the wicked.
c) The victims would include the following:-
i) The poor
ii) The helpless
iii) The widows

Asaph sought to challenge the judges to practise accountability. He risked much to speak against the wicked who perverted justice. The psalmist showed himself to be upright and righteous before God.
