Day 228 – Psalm 83

“Deal with them as with Midian…” Psalm 83:9a

A PLEA TO GOD TO DEAL WITH WICKED ENEMIES

How should one respond to wicked enemies who have ganged up together to do evil? Asaph recalled a particular period in the time of the Judges.

“Deal with them as with Midian,
As with Sisera,
As with Jabin at the Brook Kishon.”
Psalm 83:9

1. “Deal with them as with Midian” (Judges 6-8)

a) Gideon was the famous Judge God raised up to deal with the Midianites.
b) The Midianites caused the Israelites to live in dens and caves (Judges 6:2).
c) Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites (Judges 6:6a).
d) Then Israel cried out to God for His mercy (Judges 6:6b).
e) And Gideon subdued the Midianites and Israel had peace (Judges 8:28).
f) Asaph was praying that Israel’s enemies would be similarly subdued.

2. “As with Sisera, as with Jabin” (Judges 4)

a) Jabin was the king of Canaan (Judges 4:2a).
b) Sisera was the commander of the army of King Jabin (Judges 4:2b).
c) Jabin harshly oppressed Israel (Judges 4:3b).
d) Israel then cried out to the Lord for mercy (Judges 4:3a).
e) God then sent a lady Judge called Deborah (Judges 4:4).
f) Deborah was also a prophetess (Judges 4:4).
g) Deborah appointed Barak as commander of Israel’s army (Judges 4:6-7).
h) King Jabin was defeated and God subdued King Jabin (Judges 4:23).
i) Commander Sisera died ignobly, slain by a woman called Jael (Judges 4:17-22).
j) Asaph was praying that the enemies of Israel would be defeated though they may be mightier.
