Day 252 – Psalm 84

“A doorkeeper in the house of my God…” Psalm 84:10b

THE GLORY OF BEING IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD

The sons of Korah were assigned to be assistants to the Aaronic priesthood. Their duties were far from glamorous. We might even describe the work they did as “menial”. The sons of Korah had an outstanding attitude towards their service in the temple.

“For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
Psalm 84:10

1. “Your courts”

a) The sons of Korah were not allowed to enter into the Holy Place (that was reserved for the priests).
b) They were literally restricted to ministry in the courtyard of the Temple.

2. “A day in Your courts is better than a thousand”

a) A comparison is made in this text.
b) A day in the courts of the Temple versus a thousand days elsewhere.
c) The conclusion: A day in the courts of God’s temple was far better.

3. “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God”

a) There were doorkeepers.
b) These were essentially Levites (like the sons of Korah).
c) It was a very ordinary job.
d) But the sons of Korah thought that this work was something to be seen as “preferred”.

4. “Than dwell in the tents of wickedness”

a) The word “tents” was used deliberately.
b) “Tents of wickedness” was a reference to the abode of the wicked.
c) The sons of Korah rejected the tents of the wicked no matter how wealthy these abodes may appear to be.
d) Nothing could be compared with the pure joy of serving God in His house.
