“For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive…” Psalm 86:5a

THE DEADLY POWER OF SIN

David understood the deadly power of sin theologically and from personal experience.

1. He had seen how sin could tear a nation apart

a) Brother fighting brother.
b) Lawlessness in the land.
c) Great misery.

2. He had seen how sin adversely affected personal life

a) Loss of joy.
b) Sad and negative thoughts threatened to prevail.
c) Breakdown of a relationship with God.

TURNING TO GOD

David knew that he had to turn to God when he was feeling so poor and needy, and so lacking in soul-joy. But would God once again forgive? He had already turned to God countless times and made similar prayers!

“For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive,
And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.”
Psalm 86:5

1. Vital knowledge of God

The following knowledge about God stood David in good stead. Few things would bring as much joy as the following truths.

a) The Lord is good.
b) He is always ready to forgive.
c) He is abundant in mercy.

2. To all who call upon the Lord

a) He will be found to be consistent in His goodness.
b) He will always be ready to forgive… no matter how many times we grieve Him because of sin.
c) He will always show abundant mercy to all His servants who call upon Him sincerely.
